Build Your Own Shed
It is a law of nature that your stuff will expand to fill whatever storage space you have available. This is just one of the reasons that you might like a shed in your garden. And maybe you would like the extra sense of satisfaction you would feel if you were to build your own shed. It is certainly doable but not without some planning. And that doesn’t mean, dash of a sketch on a napkin.
Before you start anything, you need to know about local building regulations. Also, do you belong to a home owners association and do they have restrictions on what you can build. Once you know what type of structures are allowed and what the regulations are, you can get down to some real planning. A shed may seem like a simple thing but unless your an architect, don’t try to come up with your own design.
It can save you a lot of time and money in the long run, if you just go ahead and buy a good set of plans. For one thing, you will know what your finished shed is suppose to look like. You should have a complete materials list so that you can have everything you need on site before you start. There is nothing worse than having to break off from the job to go and by more nails.
If you know all the sizes of timber that you will need, it can make the job run a lot smoother if you pre-cut everything before you start assembly. And if you lack the tools or the skills, it doesn’t cost too much to have it done for you. If all the timber arrives, ready cut to size, you can get right on with the building. You just need to choose the location.
Obviously you will need a level site and a proper foundation. Your shed plans will have instructions for a suitable foundation to support the structure you are building. You will also have to check local planning codes on this too. It could be that their requirements are greater than the minimum. On any building project, it is always easier to get it right than put it right.
By buying a set professional shed plans, you will be sure that the finished article will not look out of place among the other buildings on your property. You will also have chosen a design that is suitable for your intended purpose. This gives you the best possible chance of ending up with something that will make you proud to say, “I built it”. If you don’t want to be stuck with an eyesore and a money pit, buy plans and build your own shed.
